Liverpool Football Club - A History

When the football league began in 1888, Anfield was one of the first grounds. However unlike today, it was Everton Football Club who were based there. When, in the early 1890s Everton had a dispute with the owner of Anfield, Tory MP John Holding, Everton were evicted and Holding and his friend William Barclay decided that the city had room for two football clubs and Liverpool Football Club was born. It was the honest and well respected Irishman John McKenna who carried out much of the early building work at the club and he is widely acknowledged with doing more than most men in the early days of the football league.

Liverpool Football Clubs first application to join the football league was rejected so they began playing as part of the Lancashire League as Liverpool Amateur Football Club in September 1892, the same day Everton Football Club played their first game at Goodison Park - their new ground.

Liverpool were a force to be reckoned with even at the start of their football life, regularly beating opposition with score lines like 8-0 during their first Lancashire League game. Once they were admitted into the Football League they produced scores of  5-0 against West Bromwich Albion and 3-0 against Blackburn Rovers. However a run of defeats meant that in 1954 Liverpool Football Club was relegated into the Second Division.

Then came Bill Shankly! Liverpool had approached Bill Shankly in 1951 to manage the club but wouldn't allow him to pick the team so he refused the job offer only to return as manager on 1st December 1959. Bill Shankly went on to become one of the most celebrated and respected football managers the league has ever seen. He built a failing Liverpool side into cup winners.

Since Bill Shankly, Liverpool has been lucky enough to have some of the greatest ever football managers including; Shankly’s successor Bob Paisley who, until very recently, had won more trophies than any other manager in English Football history.

Throughout the years, Liverpool Football Club has suffered heartache as well as glory. On 29th May 1985, 39 football supporters were killed in the Heysel Stadium disaster, leading to English teams being unable to compete in European competitions and then just four years later a FA Cup semi final turned into the biggest football tragedy in history. At Hillsborough Football Stadium on 15th April 1989, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a crush at the Leppings Lane end of the stadium. This tragic event shook not only the Kop and Liverpool but the world of football and as a direct result of the tragedy, all top flight football clubs are now all seat stadiums. Through the fighting spirit of the people of Liverpool and the football club, Liverpool FC fought on and with the sound of "You'll Never Walk Alone" ringing in their ears, continued to play on and win, in memory of the lives that were lost.

From the beginning of Liverpool Football Club, many trophies have been won, please see our Facts & Figures panel at the right of this page - today Liverpool Football Club one of the most successful clubs in the world.

'Some people believe football is a matter of life and death.
I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

I Don?t Like Mondays
When it comes to football I agree with that old Boomtown Rats song, I don?t like Mondays. It?s bad enough playing our European game on Thursday, but playing our ?weekend? league game on Monday in the same week is about as un-natural to me as monogamy seems to be at ...
The Babel Enigma
I must admit I was not only very happy but also very relieved to see us get past Unirea and move into the last 16 of the Europa League. I would normally be very confident about our chances against this kind of opposition but ahead of the game I began ...
Dreaming Of A Silver Lining
After our disappointing defeat against Arsenal last week, I decided to take a break away from football for a few days. I?ve just become so fed up with hearing all of the usual kneejerk nonsensical crap that seems to follow our every setback these days. Most of it from ignorant ...
Reds On The Rise
Well I?ve just recovered from celebrating our absolutely superb victory over our wee neighbours at the weekend. All things considered, I think our display in the game has to rate as our best performance of the season so far. There have been occasions over the years when we have beaten ...
Back To Basics
Well I guess as a Liverpool fan I should be feeling pretty happy right now but the truth is I?ve got mixed emotions at the moment. On the pitch, things are starting to come together for us at long last but off the pitch things are as frustrating as ever ...
Dances With Wolves
I was feeling as depressed as a turkey on Christmas Eve over the weekend watching all those FA Cup games because I still feel a bit bitter that we are no longer involved in the competition, especially when I look at the teams left in it. Had we got our ...
Just The Spur We Needed!
Get in there you beauty! After all of the gloom we?ve suffered in recent weeks, our terrific 2-0 victory over Spurs on Wednesday left me as happy as Harry Redknapp in a brown envelope factory! At the weekend, it was disappointing that we didn?t manage to get the three points we ...
Desperate Measures In Desperate Times
Yet another gutless, spineless and clueless performance and yet another humiliating defeat, it?s enough to make you want to throw up. This has been a season full of lows but being knocked out of the FA Cup after being outplayed by Reading on our own patch, has got to be ...
Match Postponed, Good Result!
Damn, this freezing weather is doing my head in. It?s colder than a penguin?s bollock?s over here at the moment and there?s so much pure white on the streets, I think Jermaine Pennant?s Dad must have got out on parole! A lot of sporting events have been cancelled in this ...
Liverpool Must Speculate To Accumulate
More bloody after shave and yet more bloody socks! I know Christmas is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Santa but sometimes I think it might have been created as some kind of cunning plan by the sock manufacturers of the world. Christmas has never been ...
