Sport is at the very
heart of our city. The success of both
Liverpool and
Everton football teams have
made the name of 'Liverpool' famous around the world, while
The Grand National is the world's most-watched sporting event, with an audience of
600 million every year.
The Open Golf Championship – one of the worlds greatest golfing events
returns to the Royal
Birkdale in 2008.
Just look a little
deeper and you’ll find a massive range of sports on offer
throughout the city and the region: rugby league continues to
rise in popularity, led by
St Helens Saints and Widnes Warriors, while the
Liverpool
International Tennis Tournament attracts some of the world's top tennis
talents, both past and present, such as Goran Ivanisevic, Bjorn
Borg, Pat Cash and Xavier Malisse. This May saw the first
Liverpool 08 Squash Tournament at St George's Hall, and the
event is expected to grow to form a major event in the world
squash calendar.
The world Powerboating Grand Prix was hosted here last summer,
as part of the build-up to our Capital of Culture celebrations,
while a host of watersports, including windsurfing, sailing,
jetskiing and canoeing are available around our coastline. |
