When the football league began
in 1888, Anfield was one of the first grounds. However unlike
today, it was Everton Football Club who were based there. When,
in the early 1890s Everton had a dispute with the owner of
Anfield, Tory MP John Holding, Everton were evicted and Holding
and his friend William Barclay decided that the city had room
for two football clubs and Liverpool Football Club was born. It
was the honest and well respected Irishman John McKenna who
carried out much of the early building work at the club and he
is widely acknowledged with doing more than most men in the
early days of the football league.
Liverpool Football Clubs first
application to join the football league was rejected so they
began playing as part of the Lancashire League as Liverpool
Amateur Football Club in September 1892, the same day Everton
Football Club played their first game at Goodison Park - their
new ground.

 |
Liverpool were a force to be reckoned
with even at the start of their football life, regularly beating
opposition with score lines like 8-0 during their first Lancashire
League game. Once they were admitted into the Football League they
produced scores of 5-0 against West Bromwich Albion and 3-0
against Blackburn Rovers. However a run of defeats meant that in 1954
Liverpool Football Club was relegated into the Second Division.

Then came Bill Shankly! Liverpool had
approached Bill Shankly in 1951 to manage the club but wouldn't allow
him to pick the team so he refused the job offer only to return as
manager on 1st December 1959. Bill Shankly went on to become one of the
most celebrated and respected football managers the league has ever
seen. He built a failing Liverpool side into cup winners.
Since Bill Shankly, Liverpool has been
lucky enough to have some of the greatest ever football managers
including; Shankly’s successor Bob Paisley who, until very recently, had
won more trophies than any other manager in English Football history.

| Throughout the years, Liverpool Football
Club has suffered heartache as well as glory. On 29th May 1985, 39
football supporters were killed in the Heysel Stadium disaster, leading
to English teams being unable to compete in European competitions and
then just four years later a FA Cup semi final turned into the biggest
football tragedy in history. At Hillsborough Football Stadium on 15th
April 1989, 96 Liverpool supporters lost their lives in a crush at the
Leppings Lane end of the stadium. This tragic event shook not only the
Kop and Liverpool but the world of football and as a direct result of
the tragedy, all top flight football clubs are now all seat stadiums. Through the fighting spirit of the
people of Liverpool and the football club, Liverpool FC fought on and
with the sound of "You'll Never Walk Alone" ringing in their ears,
continued to play on and win, in memory of the lives that were lost. |

'Some people believe
football is a matter of life and death.
I'm very disappointed with that attitude.
I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.'

A Long Road Ahead
My head is in a bit of a spin at the moment because there?s so many players coming and going at Liverpool at the moment that I hear Anfield has been fitted with a revolving door! The transfer activity is certainly increasing as we approach the close of the transfer window and I?m hoping that [...]
Gunning For Glory
Well after a long summer we are finally here on the eve of kicking off another Premier League season and while I?m really looking forward to the football, I?m still as confused as a hungry baby in a topless bar and I haven?t got a Scooby Doo what to expect from the campaign ahead. Off [...]
A New Season, A New Hope
It?s hard to believe another new season is upon us but here we are once again. Under normal circumstances, I would be feeling about as excited as Harry Redknapp in a brown envelope factory at this stage but these are not normal times at Anfield, in fact normal left the building a long time ago [...]
Respect For Roy
Well it?s been awhile but I make no apologies for that because I?ve just been having too good a time to allow the depressive goings on at Liverpool to spoil my mood. At the end of May last year I was made redundant but after a frustrating year of countless wild goose chases I?ve finally [...]
Thanks Rafa, YNWA
I was very sad to hear the news yesterday and I am gutted that Rafa Benitez is no longer our manager. Some people say football is like a religion and it?s easy to see why. Take Rafa for example, he arrived as a saviour, performed a few miracles, was betrayed from within and then was [...]
Little Red Shoots of Recovery
God, I?m fed up. It?s been barely more than a couple of weeks since the season finished but already I?m as bored as a midget in a theme park! Don?t get me wrong, I was happy to see the end of our miserable campaign but at the same time, even if the team is in [...]
Rafa Must Stay
Well we?ve finally got to the last weekend of this horrible season and I?m as happy as a priest at an altar boy convention that it?s almost all over! To be honest I think from several months back most of us knew deep down that this was most likely going to turn out to be [...]
All Or Nothing
One way or another we?ve got a big week ahead of us. It?s been a miserable, frustrating season and quite frankly I?ll be glad to see the back of it but if we are to stand any chance of salvaging anything from this God-awful campaign it’s all or nothing time and we need two wins [...]
New Chairman, Old Story
I?m walking around like a zombie at the moment because I?ve just spent a couple of weeks temporarily working on a night shift with my days consisting of work, sleep, a shower, a shit and a shave, and then back to work again. It?s a horrible existence but it helped pay the bills while it [...]
Benfica Or Bust!
Before focusing on our own problems I feel it is my duty as a fully paid up member of the sad, pathetic little man society to open up this blog by simply saying HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! 3-0 and they screwed it up, the mancs are dumped out of the CL and I?ve just had a great time [...]
